Netflix has done it again, giving its audiences a new hit, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. The series was released just days before Halloween on Friday, October 26th. To clarify, The Sabrina remake has a dark spin on it. What once was the bubbly Sabrina is now much more chilling, irreverent yet comedic. The reboot was created by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, the same man that brought us Riverdale was able to bring back the Greendale extension with a twist. Although the two worlds of Riverdale and Greendale collide in the Archie Comic book series, the remake does not include crossovers between Riverdale and Greendale Characters. Instead, it focuses on the mysteries of Sabrina Spellman (played by Kiernan Shipka) and the town of Greendale.
The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina gives fans insight on the life of Sabrina Spellman, half witch and half human, who has to choose between her family in the witch world or her friends in the mortal world. Nothing seems easy when she is faced with a patriarchal society in the mortal world and horrific witches in the supernatural world. During Sabrina’s dark baptism, it is apparent to the audience that Sabrina has second thoughts about her decision between her friends and family. This only makes everything worse putting both her family, friends, and Greendale at risk and it’s up to her to stop it. Throughout Sabrina’s journey to save Greendale, she has to face her misogynistic Principal, Madam Satan, and the late 13 witches. Yeah. It gets complicated.
Whilst watching the remake it is clear that there are two separate worlds and it is dangerous to mix both. It is not a horrific series, however, there are some episodes that give you goosebumps and make you question your morality. It also has its fair share of blood splatter. The show makes you fall in love with the characters and later fall out of love, It gives you a sense of empowerment and a sense of hopelessness and betrayal all in a ten-episode span.
It should be made clear that everything involved with making this production was done well in order to make it feel magical yet scary.
The editing and special effects were done neatly and the set design and props added to the feeling of authenticity to the witch world. Another thing that made the series a success was the writing.
It had great comedic timing and it made just enough irreverent remarks to give the audience a good guilty laugh.
That being said, “The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina” gives enough insight on both Sabrina Spellman and the rest of Greendale while exploring both worlds briefly. This is a reboot that needs to be appreciated. Do I recommend? 100% yes.
