40 days of Non-Violence Lost

Earlier in the semester Mr. Boyes and Mr. Padilla were planning potential ways to help improve the school; one of these goals was to end the school year with two or fewer physical altercations. Therefore, they came up with the intention to celebrate every 21 school days without physical altercations.

They decided to celebrate non-violence throughout the school semester because they wanted people to know that violence doesn’t solve anything and that violence just leads to more violence.

“When you build relationships it’s less likely that harm is going to between two people.”

On average fights happened around every 8 and a half school days,  and most of the time fights would happen outside of the classroom, for example during lunch or passing periods. But so far administrators have been successful in preventing any altercations.

Often fights happen due to miscommunication between students because they might not know how to communicate with each other by highlighting this significant problem administrators and staff can tackle the problem and have students talk and communicate with one another about their situation before it becomes a larger problem.

“We want to build stronger relationships between students and between staff including teachers”

Since admin was pushing for a more commutive and positive environment they were able to prevent a few fights, averaging around 3 fights this semester, compared to last year when it was 6 throughout the entire school year.

The longest the school was able to go without any physical altercations was 40 days unfortunately admin didn’t meet their goal of holding off any altercations till the end of the school year, but they were able to handle the last altercation successfully, without any other serious consequences. Perhaps next semester administration and staff could create new ways to handle these types of situations and successfully meet their goal.
