Every year, Central American migrants travel from Guatemala to the Mexico border into Mexico and towards Mexico to the United States border. They have been doing the caravan for so long that it wasn’t a trending news to the U.S but this year was different than the country that doesn’t know what to do.
On March 25, 2018, 1,500 people walked from Chiapas, the south of Mexico to the north. Leaving their families and escaping from violence, their goal is to go to the United States and have a future. This caravan, 32 women are pregnant and the city of Oaxaca Mexico helped them to obtain medical attention.
In Tijuana Mexico, the association Pueblo Sin Fronteras was waiting for the migrants to get there because they were going to help them with anything they needed. The president Donald Trump saw how much people were coming to the border he tweeted
“Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the U.S. is very generous too, send many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES. Caravans are heading here. Must pass tough Laws and build the WALL. Democrats allow open borders, drugs, and crime!”
The migrants said that their goal wasn’t to conquer the border; they want to get a work permit. The coordinator said that the caravan is spreading into small groups. 1,000 people decided to leave to Mexico City to a shelter near la Basilica de Guadalupe. Other people are heading back to their countries, and hundreds of migrants are hoping that they will be able to go to the United States and received asylum. Lawyers from Mexico City are helping few people to stay in Mexico City since they don’t want to go back to their country because they said a lot of gangs are killing their family.
In the article expansion.MX, the author mentioned that “a Salvadorian woman is escaping from gang violence because they killed her husband and that they wanted to take his son away from her but luckily she had the chance to escape with his two-year-old boy”.
Although for many immigrants their goal is to cross the border, president Donald Trump doesn’t want immigrants to come the country illegally because he says “…congress must immediately pass border Legislation, use the Nuclear option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of drugs, and people. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the Weak Dem Laws don’t allow them to do their job. ACT Now Congress, our country is being stolen!”
