Many have been saddened by the recent death of star Matthew Perry,
He has impacted many people’s lives in many ways. Co-stars, fans, everyone has something to say about who Perry was and who he will be remembered as.
First responders discovered Matthew Perry, 54, dead on October 28th, 2023 at his Los Angeles home. According to the Los Angeles Times, an anonymous source was not able to cite a cause of death due to the ongoing investigation but did say there were no other drugs besides prescribed medications found in Perry’s home.
Many people have made assumptions as to how or why Matthew Perry passed away, and a lot have decided to blame it on his struggle against alcohol and drug addiction. In his memoir, ‘I’m Grateful to be Alive’, he speaks on the fight he had against his addiction and how he dealt with it. Perry revealed he had been hospitalized for 5 months due to an opioid overuse that caused his colon to burst after being in a coma for 2 weeks.
In Hank Azaria’s recent Instagram post about Matthew Perry, he refers to his relationship with Perry as them being more like brothers than friends. He then continues to talk about how funny he was on and off screen, reminiscing on the time he spent alone with Perry or around other friends.
Azaria reveals that Perry played a big role in his achieving sobriety, he states “The night I went into AA, Matthew brought me in. The whole first year I was sober, we went to meetings together” (LA Times) Azaria goes on speaking about how he struggled to read through Matthew Perry’s memoir, he states “We just missed him. It’s one of the terrible things about this disease, it just takes away the person you love” (Hank Azaria) He believed that although Matthew overcame this addiction, it wasn’t easy and for him to share it publicly and in detail, was inspiring but hard to grasp truly.
Although some will speak only on the issues that Matthew Perry struggled with,
many will speak on the impact he had on everyone around him. He was someone who helped others deal with their addictions the way he was able to get through his own. Perry became an inspiration to those struggling.
