What do you do when the show you’ve been keeping up with for so long finally comes to an end? No more episodes, trailers, spoilers or leaks. As annoying as the spoilers and leaks were, most Attack on Titan fans will heavily miss them and are going through this “heart-break” right now.
On November 4th, 2023, the final episode of Attack on Titan premeired. Though, it’s first episode came out ten years ago, on September 28, 2013. The manga (comics or graphic novels from Japan) had been released a couple years prior. Due to the intense support and popularity, it was soon made into an anime series.
The fictional show first takes place in the year 845, where there are towns surrounded by large walls. Outside of these walls, the land is covered with man-like titans who eat humans. Disturbing their peace behind the walls, a titan tall enough knocks one down. This allowed for the titans to enter and cause chaos.
Fueled by the anger of his mother’s death from one of these creatures, Eren Jaeger and his friends join the military and soon after joins the Scout Regiment, vowing to kill every titan.
The show grows heavily from here, new characters are added and a few of them unfortunately killed off. The plot grows and many plot twists are revealed. With the show coming to an end, there were many mixed thoughts about what fans expected.
Alexander Damian, a 10th grade magnet student at Huntington Park High school, said that, “I grew up with this show, I started watching it when I was kind of young and now it’s finishing when I’m older. My mom said to stop being so sad about it since it was just a show but I’m going to miss it anyways.”
The show was about ten years old, so a whole decade can really make a difference in someone’s life.
Another 10th grade student by the name of Nathan Salazar stated, “I honestly didn’t expect it to end like that. I don’t read the actual manga so I was surprised when I saw how everything went down.”
Unlike him, many students did read the manga, or at least had an idea of how the story finished due to social media. Many fans have mixed emotions about the ending. It’s normal to be not happy about it due to the circumstances of what happened. Though, there were some things in the ending that were changed. There were also times when people thought the animation was a bit weird. Even so, most fans were extremely happy with the ending. Some parts of animation were done beautifully and the emotion the voice-actors had felt very real. More people should watch the show just because of it’s amazing acting and animation. It’s type of storytelling is very suspenseful and addicting. Anime watchers or not, the show is very good.
Although already knowing what happens can ruin the ending in a way, seeing the most important scenes happen animated and not printed can really change the way you see it.
I myself have been watching for about three years, so I didn’t feel the attachment as much as people who have been watching it for years did. Though, it did affect me because it was an anime I rewatched many times and was one of my favorites. Despite it’s end, we can hope that the creator comes back with more amazing stories like these.
