Defending CIF Champions Ready for Another Strong Season

The anticipation is evident as the defending Softball CIF champions, gear up to embark on another thrilling season. With their first game scheduled for March 13th against South Gate High School, the team is eager to hit the field and showcase their skills once again.

Last year’s triumph in the CIF championships shows this team’s dedication, skill, and unwavering spirit.

“I feel so proud of my team and me for winning the CIF championships and I can’t wait to do it again this year!” said Belany Tapia, Junior at HP.

Their victory against Maywood Academy in the CIF with a score of 10-8 showcased their resilience and determination, setting a strong tone for the upcoming season. Their victory not only brought glory to the school but also instilled a sense of pride in the entire community. Now, as they prepare to defend their title, the players are more determined than ever to leave their mark on the upcoming season.

One of the defining characteristics of this year’s team is their remarkable teamwork. “I like that we all get along so I think that works with sportsmanship and communication,” said Aileen Zuniga, a freshman at HP.

There are 7 returners and 5 new players this season. From seasoned veterans to fresh faces, every team member shares a bond that extends beyond the field.

The team’s goals for this season are clear: to reclaim their spot in the CIF championships and to surpass their performance from last year. To maintain their championship status, the team reflects on previous games to identify areas for improvement and adjust their game plan accordingly.

“Ultimately, our goal is to instill a winning mindset in every player through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to continuous improvement,” said Head softball coach, Elena Vizcarra.

In terms of training, Coach Viscarra emphasizes an approach that includes physical conditioning, skill development, and mental fortitude. “We work on improving individual skills such as hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running, while also emphasizing teamwork and situational awareness.”

Tough opponents are inevitable, and the team approaches each game with a mindset of respect for their competition while maintaining confidence in themselves as players. Injuries are always a concern, so they prioritize injury prevention through proper warm-up routines, conditioning exercises, and rest days.

Other setbacks, such as rainy weather affecting practice schedules or academic commitments conflicting with game times, are also challenges they anticipate.”We view obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning,” Coach Viscarra states.

“By maintaining a positive attitude, staying adaptable, and working together as a team, we overcome any challenges that come our way.” – Coach Viscarra.
