Safety is one of the most important things that matter when you think about school, now more than ever. In today’s society the students safety from outside factors has always been a concern. However, what about the factors in-side of schools?
But what about drug safety with students? ” The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed the way that young people interact with one another and offers us an opportunity to examine whether drug taking behavior has shifted through these changes,”
Due to the pandemic it is more common to see an increase in the way students interact with drugs. The increase of drug usage varies from student to student. However, making marijuana more accessible for young- adults who just have to ask their medical physician is not.
There is a heavy presence of marijuana usage on campus that is negatively impacting us as the future generation.
After covid it has been more common to see students having/actively use Marijuana. “ 35% percent of high school seniors have reported using marijuana in 2020. ” This is very alarming to hear because as young adults we are still growing physically and mentally. The over usage of marijuana can impair your learning and affect how we are seen in society.
“The accessibility of drugs. Unfortunately now, marijuana is legal for adults and unfortunately it is a lot more accessible for minors… we are dealing with these types of situations where it creates a hostile learning situation. ” As Mr. Alfaro has stated this needs to be fixed.
It negatively impacts not just us but the schools. Our school has not implemented any new policies about usage of drugs in school. It is commonly known that drugs of any kind are not allowed in school, but that does not mean that students will listen to it.
There are adults on campus who know about the usage of drugs used on campus but decided to turn a blind eye on these types of situations because it’s just marijuana. However, all drugs are dangerous if not used properly. Marijuana is legal in california but not for students in highschool.
Our school needs to implement new policies that put the pressure on students and staff to emphasize the long lasting effects of excessive drug usage. Marijuana can have positive effect when prescribed for medical reasons over 8 but not for the young lives of students who have their whole life ahead of them.
“ We have consistent communication with the parents.” Mr. Alfaro stated.
There needs to be a wider line of communication between the parents and school. HP and parents have to come together to truly educate themselves on that matter.
Schools can start the conversation about the usage of marijuana but without the help of the parents can there be any real change?
