THE RIVALRY CONTINUES

Another year, another irresistible HP-Bell rivalry to end the season on a high note! The highly awaited matchup has repeated for almost a century and has kept the community on their tippy toes. The Varsity Head Coach, Coach Jimenez, has built the HP Varsity Football Team a 7-3 record coming into the HP-Bell bout of 11/1. The 2024 roster consists of 88 total players with 29 seniors, who all worked extremely hard towards their winning season. HP had high hopes bringing the energy, stampeding on the field of the eagles with confidence to continue the 4-win streak from the past 4 years, although with a devastating outcome.

“It was hard, losing and seeing your trophy get taken away by your rival school, the other side of the field filled with joy and happiness, but I also feel that this game made us a better team. I don’t think I have ever felt like such a student of the game until this day.”-David C., senior #81 on HP Varsity.

Despite having one of the best defenses in the Eastern League, our beloved Spartans let away 35 points to the Eagles with the halftime score of 7-35. Prior to the annual rivalry game, HP practiced everyday for 3 long hours ever since the beginning of summer to put themselves in the position they are in now. Through every scrimmage, strength training, conditioning day, they persevered to become the exceptional team they are today.

Due to this, the HP Spartans charged out of the locker room into the second half with their pride and fire in their eyes. #23 Noah M. led the Spartans with 2 touchdowns starting the third quarter and brought hope back to the HP crowd. The score became 35-20 and the comeback was in close reaches. Although the refs made a huge mistake and missed a pull on the facemask by the Eagles, which quickly brought the tide of the game back to how it started.

“The feeling of going home with a win or a loss motivated us during halftime because we really wanted to win. It sucks what happened with the refs at the end because of nonsense, we should have won.” – Noah M., senior #23 on HP Varsity.

The cheers in the crowds went silent, encouragement turned into heckling and boos towards the ref. Thankfully, HP Cheerleaders came to the rescue and brought the crowd right back on track until the end of the game.

“It was great energy till the end, very much a bittersweet moment because this was my last time cheering for our rivalry football game.”-Aleeya G., senior on the HPHS Cheer team.

The loss had an insignificant change to their winning season, although it played an essential part in the team’s chemistry and morale. Their defeat was used as fuel to their fire, encouraging their motivation going into the playoffs. The Football Team played hard and eventually had to hand back the trophy of 4 years to the Eagles, although the Spartans made sure that HP vs. Bell Football 24’ Rivalry Game went down in history.
