Beyond the net

As the new year unfolds, the boys soccer season is back in full swing! The Spartans have faced some challenges early on, but their spirits remain high as they set their sights on finishing the season with strength and determination and are confident in a league win. The Spartans are ready to overcome early obstacles and close out the season on a high note.

The Spartans recently faced off against South Gate in a hard-fought match that ended in a 2-1 loss. While the result was disappointing, it has only fueled the team’s resolve to push harder in the coming games. With a limited number of matches remaining in the season, the Spartans remain optimistic, believing that a strong comeback is still within reach. The narrow defeat has motivated the players to work even harder, and they are determined to give their all in the final stretch of the season.

This year, Varsity captain is Jose Limon, Junior, this is his first year as captain and he is trying to be the best captain possible for his team. Limon has been in varsity for 3 years he’s an attacking midfielder which controls the ball and make connections with the forwards to make good passes in between each other.A goal he has for himself and his team are to “improve on team values”.

Moving on to returner, Derek Contreras who is in 12th grade and has been playing here at HP for 4 years. Derek plays a left back and right back which defends the attacking team from trying to score. He believes the season has been going well but due to the recent and unfortunate fires it stalled their season and ruined their flow.

“Season has been going good unfortunately because of the fires they stalled our season for a week which kind of ruined the flow otherwise it’s been a pretty good season”

Both athletes believe it can be stressful balancing academics and soccer due to exams and practices ending late. These recent losses have also had a significant impact on the boys season, although it plays a part in the teams chemistry. Coach Bonilla believes that in order to succeed they need to learn how to compete.

Coach Warner Bonilla has been coaching for 15 years, it is his passion even with a difficult season he has faith in his team. Above all, he wants the boys to remember that learning to compete is crucial. By the end of the season, he aims for them to understand how to compete effectively and work together as a team.

“Many need to learn to compete before anything else, hopefully by the end of the season they know how to compete and work together”
