Universal Pictures is currently developing a live-action remake of the popular animated film “How to Train Your Dragon”. The project is being directed by Dean DeBlois, who directed the original animated trilogy.
The live-action remake is being brought to life by an impressive cast, including Mason Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson, and Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast.
The plot for this story follows Hiccup, a young viking who forms a bond with a dragon in a world where dragons and humans are sworn enemies. As Hiccup navigates the complexities of his new unlikely friendship, he challenges the traditions of his tribe and confronts the dangers that threaten his home.
According to a report by Collider, ” The project is still in its early stages, but the studio is keen on reviving the franchise, which has generated over $1.5 billion at the global box office.” Emphasizing the popularity of this film as the original trilogy was a worldwide success. This success may be attributed to its unique blend of adventure, and heart, that resonated with its audiences.
The live-action remake is expected to feature a combination of practical and visual effects to bring the dragons and viking world to life. Production is currently underway, with Universal Pictures aiming to bring a “new perspective” to the franchise. As noted by Variety, “The live-action remake is expected to deliver a fresh take on the story, while staying true to the spirit of the original animated films.”
However this “fresh take” has created mixed feelings for many, as people are skeptical of whether or not the live-action will capture the film’s essence. Along with claiming the original animated film was perfect as it was and there is no need for a remake.
Though an official release date has yet to be confirmed, rumors suggest the live-action remake will hit theaters on June 13, 2025.
