As the softball season kicks off, the Lady Spartans are looking forward to what the upcoming year will bring. Even with the changes and challenges that lie ahead, they believe they can overcome whatever stands in their way.
This year’s varsity team consists of 14 players with 9 starters. This year there are 10 returners and 4 new players. Due to the shortage of players there is no junior varsity team this year. Although it’s similar to baseball, it’s typically played on a smaller field with a larger ball. The goal of the game is to score more runs than the opposing team. Teams alternate between playing defense and offense and with each team getting three outs per half inning. A game lasts seven innings and the team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.
The starting roster is:
Leilani Claros (first baseman)
Janessa Montes (2nd Baseman)
Haylee Nunez (ShortStop)
Jasmine Lemus (3rd Baseman)
Aileen Zuniga (Left Outfielder)
Hazel Nunez (Center Field)
Stacy Rosales (Right Field)
Belany Tapia (Pitcher)
Kendra Huerta (Catcher)
The Spartans began their season with a strong victory, securing a 22-17 win against Diego Rivera. As the season progresses they currently hold a 2-3 record showing resilience and determination in their comeback efforts. This marks a significant improvement considering the challenges they faced in 2024 when they failed to win a single league game.
The 2023 season was defining for the Spartans, as they were crowned CIF champions. This achievement was not without difficulties, the team had to adapt to a significantly more intense and complex environment the following year.
Last season is particularly significant since the team has moved up to Division III. This presented new challenges, competing at that high level in a different division tested their skills, strategy, and mental toughness. However, the experience gained from their CIF championship run has shaped their current performance and has helped them navigate the challenges of their new division. The lessons learned from last season continue to influence their growth and determination, as they aim to build on their successes and push forward this year.
One of the biggest challenges the young spartans face was the transition after the former softball coach, Elena, left. For a while, the team had no dedicated coach which left them in a bit of uncertainty. Fortunately, Vanessa Castillo stepped up and took charge, now she confidently leads the lady spartans as they battle this tough season. With the help of Jazmin Gonzalez, former girls soccer coach.
“They’re good coaches, but they don’t really know how to coach softball yet, but they’re learning,” mentioned Captain Leilani Claros
Vanessa was recently the girls soccer photographer, and although it is a new environment, the girls believe she will lead them through this season. While she is still learning the ins and outs of softball they remain hopeful.
“This season is different, new coaches, new girls, were leading and taking charge so its different for everyone”, stated senior Haylee Nunez.
Now that the young Spartans have new coaches and players, it will be tough, but with the bonds they have created they believe this season will be one to remember.

The environment feels like “one big family, everyone is so welcoming we all bonded so quickly” stated newcomer, Jasmine Lemus.
As the returners take charge by teaching the newcomers how to play and speaking up when needed to keep everyone motivated and focused, this brings a positive attitude to the entire team.
The girls are having a great time this season, embracing the changes, and are excited to make it a memorable one.
