Girl’s golf is a relatively new team in Huntington Park High School, running on its fourth year looking to make an impact across the campus as this is only the beginning of something big.
Mr.Moreno, who is the current advisor of the sport, plans on making golf known in the community of HP as he thinks Golf isn’t as popular in the latinx community and believes it is important to bring other societies and cultures together. The benefits of joining golf are new ideas and opportunities as well as being able to network with other people.
The team has lost many of its seniors and doesn’t have many returning players, but it’s a perfect chance to establish something new and improved. While building this new team, the students have the opportunity to be a part of a sport that they feel more comfortable in. Practicing golf for many students makes them feel more involved in the school and more social with others in a way that they may have never thought of.
“Last season I felt weight off my shoulders because most of my teammates were seniors. I knew as a beginner not much was expected of me, but now I know I have to step up and have that responsibility as a leader.”
says Katherine Monterrosa, a senior, who is a returning player of the golf team and plans to make an impact this season as she assumes a new leadership role. She is entering uncharted territory being one of the players that her teammates will rely on being a senior she aims to rise up to the challenge and be the leader she knows she can be. Golf allows students to grow into adulthood as it exposes them to leadership roles.
Mr.Moreno takes a huge risk kick starting HP golf, a sport that is very unfamiliar in the Latinx community as Golf has never really been a sport that is super popular here in HP. Coach Moreno has not let that stop him from opening the door for golf here at HP not afraid of failure from the program as he aims to introduce the sport to a small Hispanic city here in Southeast Los Angeles.
“Whether I decide to stay or not I feel as if I did the hardest thing by presenting the sport to the HP community of HP. By then HP will have more experienced players and will thrive as a team.”
The future and development of Girl’s Golf looks promising and can make an impact on the school as well as the community in the coming years.
