School renovations have occurred all throughout campus since the start of modernization in 2019. HPHS has modernized many buildings, like the 300s, 40s. and main building, while completely replacing the former 70s and 200s building which are now the 200s and 400s building.
The school also welcomed the new amphitheater located on Spartan Way which has already been busy with the Dia de los Muertos and upcoming Heritage Fair hosted by the Foreign Language Department. In addition, historic student hang outs like Stockton Court and Belgrave received a much needed refresh.
During the 2023-2024 school year, the new gym opened, which benefited sports programs, physical education classes, added another venue for assemblies, and made more room for new teachers on campus. During the second semester of last year, the new 200s and 400s building opened. This paved the way for new teachers to teach here on campus.
However, with brand new renovations being added throughout campus, there have been burning concerns over renovations on the 30s building, and if it will ever be renovated.
The only new renovations towards the 30s building are the new AC, but even with that, there have been problems with the temperature, lights, and breakers
The 30s building has been an iconic building used by a handful of teachers, but with the problems arising not only from students but also from teachers, many are looking towards more help.
Mr. Pina, a math teacher at HPHS, expresses his concerns about his problems with the 30s building,
“There are some things that I think do need attention. For example, the lights in the hallway. For some of them, the covers are falling off, and some of those lights go out pretty often.”
There are many other issues that teachers may have that cause a lot of problems for both students and teachers, like temperature and lights. In some cases, the lights do go out, and it’s a little hard to see the students’ faces.
Temperature, at times, makes many students uncomfortable. With new air conditioners to cool students, it’s still not enough, as the heat from the sun overcomes the cooling air.
Many teachers like Mr. Pina would very much appreciate a new classroom if they were given a chance.
While it’s good that the school has some investment, there isn’t much hope for old buildings like the 30s building. Many teachers and students would appreciate the investment of older buildings of the 30s, 20s, and 10s building.
