Op-ED: Bad Bunny should not be in the Superbowl half-time show

When thinking about the Superbowl half-time show, you think of a performance that many people will enjoy. The Superbowl half-time show only happens once a year which is why I think the performer should be someone that everyone enjoys. It’s already been decided that Bad Bunny will be performing the show this year, and least to say I think it’ll be a small step up but not much better than last year’s.

Honestly, I think everyone will be biased because many people really like Bad Bunny. I feel like his music is very repetitive and usually uses the same sounds which isn’t really to my liking.

Over the past decade, I feel as if the quality has gone down since earlier on there were much better ones with more outstanding performances. There was the half-time show by Prince which set an unbelievable standard for all other upcoming shows when it started to rain during the performance of his song “Purple Rain”. I hadn’t heard of it until recently but once I saw it it transcended my expectations, and this performance really set my standards for the upcoming show.

Although knowing that Bad Bunny is pretty much a mediocre performer, does not put much effort into his work, and is overall very overplayed, I was pretty let down when it was confirmed that he would play the half-time show. Overall I think that all concert prices are ridiculous but Bad Bunny’s tickets are outrageous just for him to not even give much of a performance.

Another performance that really stuck out to me was the show performed by J-Lo and Shakira, their show was amazing. There were so many things to look at and props to go along, which I would have to say was better than last year by Kendrick Lamar. K-dots performance was mediocre since it was mainly him walking around the stage surrounded by backup dancers. I think to make a half-time show memorable there would need to be a lot more than just the main performer and backup dancers.

Since it has only been confirmed recently that he would be playing, I think that there is still time for improvements in his performance. Based on his concerts alone, it seems that most seem to really adore him and be willing to pay a large amount for a regular admission ticket. I’m not sure what exactly the show will be like but I can likely say that I will not like it.

There is always a momentous crowd in the Superbowl game but most football fans walk away during the half-time show. Now that the audience knows that he is going to be playing they will likely feel more compelled to only come back and watch the other half of the football game.

After interviewing some students there were many that simply didn’t care for the half-time show at all and were only watching for the superbowl. Although there was one that shared a similar opinion to mine. Alejandra Bonilla says,

“In reality people have gotten very picky over the years and will complain just about anything, it doesn’t matter if Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican, it doesn’t make his performance any worse or better.”

Another reason as to why this half-time show will not be peak is because of the fear of immigration raids, there is lots of controversy as to Bad Bunny’s performance and most that are upset at the fact that he is performing. I am simply going off of his music quality while others are basing it on him being Puerto Rican and “anti-american”. I don’t think it should get this deep when discussing a Superbowl performance but I guess that’s where we’re at.
