What Happened to Fortnite?

Since the start of 2025, one of the greatest free player versus player games of all time has suffered a decline in player interest. Since its release in 2017, Fortnite became one of the most popular video games in the world with its peak accumulating up to 44 million players active in a single day in 2023. A couple months after (in May 2023) there was a notable downturn in active players and game popularity.

Fortnite was first created in 2011 and then developed for early release in 2017 and fully released later that same year. Its original game mode called “Save the World” performed poorly, which led to the launch of Battle Royale, which ultimately saved the game. Battle Royale performed outstandingly, racking up to 10 million active players in the first 2 weeks of its release. Although this wasn’t the first time Battle Royale had been made into a game before, it performed better than rival games because it was believed to be executed better by Epic Games when it first came out. The history of battle royale could be tied to the film Battle Royale (2000), a movie about high school students being given random weapons having to fight to the death while also staying in the safe zone while it shrinks as the film progresses, very similar to the concept of Fortnite.

Players speculate that the reason for its decline since its release to present day could be because of its skill gap since the release of the game compared to now, with the game becoming a lot more difficult to play. Many on popular apps like Tiktok have shared their thoughts, as Tiktok user bbygirlliyah80 says,

“I miss when the game was fair and square and all you had were guns and health”,

With multiple fans sharing the same sentiment, it led to the loss of player interest. At release, the game was a huge hit because it was something different compared to competing games. While Fortnite continuously updates their game with new collaborations and game modes, it is still not enough to keep once devoted players interested. Another Tiktok user “will…power” says,

“…I never even get the chance to learn the recent update before a new one happens…, I can’t keep up.”

These collaborations negatively affected the playability of the game because of the fact that things got too complex.

Fortnite new update 2025

Its success could be attributed to its unique features, with a cartoon-like animated style which made the concept of the game less intimidating and better equipped to cater to all age groups. Rival games at the time such as PUBG and Call of Duty were big competitors in the shooter-game category. What made Fortnite increasingly successful was also the fact that they incorporated a building feature in addition to the player versus player aspect. While this made Fortnite unique, some of its very first collaborations including Marvel’s Thanos, Stranger Things, and John Wick added to its widespread media fame.

At first these collaborations improved the game but over time led to its downfall. While players continue to have different theories as to why the game started to lose its popularity, multiple opinions have been gathered by Huntington Park’s very own students. Victor Canales, a senior and veteran player since 2018 says,

“The popularity has gone down because the new stuff isn’t as good as past stuff. It’s really easy to get bored,”

With Fortnite attempting to revive its craze with its most recent mini-season collaboration with The Simpsons, a recent surge of 2.6 million players has hit Battle Royale. While this improves Fortnite’s player count, is it enough to keep players invested? Players that continue to show their dedication to Fortnite often talk about how what keeps the game alive is the many opportunities to buy new things and personalize the game.

12th grader David Cisneros says,

“I like the amount of customization you can do in the game, it keeps things interesting.”

This forces players to wonder: Is their biggest appeal proving to be their biggest downfall? With fans of the game enjoying the customization and the concept of the item shop, for lots of consumers the game has gotten to be too much to where people have lost interest and it’s not enough to stay invested.

So what can Epic Games do to plan their big comeback? While people share different views on what could revive Fortnite’s popularity to how it was before, fans seem to share the same feeling of nostalgia from a time where the game was easier to play and understand while also being entertaining for all ages. There is a notable difference in Fortnite’s demographic, with the primary ages spanning from 18-24 years old in 2025 while in 2018 (a little after the launch of the game) the primary ages started from as young as 12. While Fortnite has released their OG Fortnite game mode, dating back to earlier seasons in chapter 1, at first players were into the idea of having the old map and weapons back, but the players and atmosphere just couldn’t be replicated to its fullest. As Epic Games does whatever they can to bring back the massive amounts of players they once had, what is really going to bring their game back up to the top?
