History Repeats Itself: U.S. Enters War With Iran

Distress about new war intensifies among Iranian Minnesotans

The US, without informing Congress, has attacked Iran and entered into a war alongside Israel.

The US and Israel have had conflict with Iran since the late 1900s. According to the BBC, the Iranian leadership has been for Israel’s elimination and sees the US as its greatest enemy.

What followed in June 2025 was the US military destroying Iran’s nuclear and military sites. The reasoning was that the US believed that Iran was developing nuclear weapons. Although this did not immediately begin the war with Iran, it was one of the stepping stones leading up to the conflict.

Much hadn’t occurred until January, when talk of attacking Iran once more arose. Negotiations were not going through, according to Trump. And on February 28, Israel and the US attacked Iran. This came as a shock to many people, but was shocking for Congress, as they were not consulted beforehand on the strikes, only being told moments after the US struck Iran. What made this shocking was that Congress, not the president, has the power to declare war.

Soon after the attack, many Iranian officials died within the first strikes, including the supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed. In addition to these deaths, there were also reports of a US missile striking a girls’ school, killing many civilians and causing mass destruction.

Donald Trump would later post a video on Truth Social, encouraging the Iranian people to rebel against their own government. But later on, they would backtrack on that previous statement and want Iran to cooperate with US demands similar to what the US did with Venezuela. In Venezuela, they put in an acting president to allow US control of Venezuela. According to the BBC, Iran is not currently negotiating with the US to end the war.

“Bombs will be dropping everywhere. When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations. “

This war is costly, as reports state that over 24 billion dollars have already been spent with no return. To add on, the Strait of Hormuz is controlled by Iran, which provides 20% of the world’s liquid oil, and has been closed off since the war began in February. In the US, it costs about $96 per barrel of crude oil.  fill.

Trump has also mentioned the idea of withdrawing from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) due to a lack of support in the war from other countries in NATO. This is significant because withdrawing will break trust with other allies within NATO and allow Russia and China to hold more power geopolitically. Furthermore, Trump is using this threat to try to force other countries to aid him in this war.

The US recently contacted Iran through a third country on April 1st to open talks on a ceasefire, and on April 3rd, they refused a ceasefire. In turn, Trump on social media stated,

Moving forward to April 7th, Trump has ranted and posted something that was seen as controversial due to its strong language and threat to Iran.

“…Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Trump’s outburst on Truth Social was unexpected by most people, but it displays Trump’s anger with how the Iran war is going so far.

The US has a lack of support from allied countries, which has negatively impacted US products. Many people in the US do not want this war to drag on due to the amount of funding put into this war for no benefit.
