Girl Golf has had a rough season. There have been many struggles due to a lot of seniors graduating last year and also recent heat waves causing the cancelation of practices.
The cancellation of practices has made a huge impact on the team. They are not able to practice their swing when a good chunk of girls are in their first year playing golf.
The way you swing the club is very awkward and also understanding what club they need to use is very difficult. This caused early on struggles but over time they got the hang of it and have improved.
They are currently 1-9 but this does not mean the girls are not passionate or do not put in the effort.

“The girls are very passionate and happy to be on the team,” Moreno said, “They show up to practice and games happy and ready to play…You can tell they have fun, they are always laughing and talking to other girls from other schools–creating bonds and friendships”
Although more than half the seniors last year graduated, the seniors this year have been able to step up and take the leadership role and use some things they learned from past seniors.
Some advice the seniors have been able to give to their fellow teammates is advice on what clubs to use and how they should hit it.
Coach Moreno mentions that a lot of seniors are able to step into leadership roles especially the captains Rachel Ramirez and Leslie Diaz Flores. They had the most improvement and consistency with their game which is why coach Moreno made them captain and co-captain.
“Through Moreno’s coaching, my hard work and my hunger I was able to improve and lead my team game after game” Rachel said.
Nathalie, a senior returner mentions that a very important skill moreno has taught the girls is to stay composed when they have a bad swing or game
This has helped a lot of the team to overcome their struggles and forget about the mistakes they made by the time they get to the next hole.
Coach Moreno has been the coach for the past 4 years and has played a huge role in the team and has become not only a coach but a mentor to the team. He encourages them before swings. He also gives them suggestions on what club to use and how to hit it depending on their position.

Something Moreno has drilled in the girls’ heads is that “Golf is a great parallel to life. You can hit a good ball but when you go see where it is in a terrible place.”
“You can try your best on something and do everything right and it may not work out the way you thought it would but you still have to keep going to get where you want to be”
Coach Moreno tries to remind them that golf is meant to be fun and that there are going to be tough shots during the game but they can’t give up the fight just like in life.
“Success is not always measured by the score or your record as long as you get better than you were yesterday and having fun thats all that matter”
Since it is a senior heavy team they have a lot of things they need to do to prepare for their future and sometimes forget to have fun and enjoy their time they have.
The overall bond and chemistry the team has is great. They spend time together outside of the games. They go out to eat after games or even after school when they do not have games
As the season ends, underclassmen and Moreno wish to get more girls to join and hopefully have as much fun as they had this season.
“Life is not always going to be easy, there is going to be tough times and emotional battles you have to fight through but there is going to be a moment where it is going to click and it is going to work out”
